Gomeh Hotel

Imagine a hotel slashing its energy bills while becoming more sustainable. That’s the story of Gomeh Hotel’s green transformation. The Gomeh Hotel in the Sea of Galilee, part of the prestigious Isrotel hotel chain, stands as a model of modern hospitality. However, like many hotels, Gomeh faced the challenge of meeting its extensive hot water demands in an environmentally sustainable and cost-effective manner.

In 2019, it installed state-of-the-art heat pumps to heat water more efficiently. In 2022, the hotel’s commitment to the highest environmental sustainability standards pushed it to seek innovative renewable heat technology.

At the end of this journey, the hotel lowered energy costs and emissions using solar thermal technologies, heat storage, and cloud-based controls, establishing Gomeh as a model in eco-friendly hospitality.

Maximizing sustainability of hot water supply

The Gomeh Hotel’s journey towards a greener future came with several challenges:

  • Improving the sustainability of the electrical heat pumps: Isrotel’s management wanted to add renewable heat energy into the process, i.e., pre-heat water by more sustainable means such as thermal solar heat, thus reducing electricity consumption.
  • Peak hour demand and high electricity tariffs: Most hot water usage occurred between 5 and 11 pm, coinciding with sunset and high electricity tariffs.
  • Strict health regulations: The hotel must circulate hot water 24/7  at a minimum of 55 degrees Celsius to prevent health hazards like Legionella.

Identifying a solution that could effectively tackle these challenges was of utmost importance.

Piecing the puzzle with TIGI’s unique solar collector, thermal storage, and cloud-based control

After extensive research, Gomeh Hotel’s management decided on TIGI Solar’s innovative system. This decision aligned perfectly with their environmental and operational needs:

  • Thermal solar collectors: 104 of TIGI’s Honeycomb solar thermal collectors were installed on the hotel’s roof, efficiently producing hot water even during cold winter days. Using transparent insulation on the sun-facing side, the collectors dramatically reduce heat losses, making them significantly more efficient and less area-demanding than other technologies in the market.
  • Thermal storage: The system includes thermal storage. Tanks store hot water at different temperatures, with valves controlled by storage management algorithms. The sophisticated management allows an optimal water supply in varied temperatures between heat processes 24/7.
  • Advanced cloud-based control: This optimizes energy use by considering demand, sunny hours, and changing electricity rates, getting heat from the solar system, and minimizing the use of heat pumps during high-cost electricity hours. The control subsystem is intuitive, easy to use, and can be managed on any desktop or mobile device and connected to the building’s control system.

Increased sustainability can be financially sound, reliable, and robust

Adding TIGI’s collectors, thermal storage, and advanced control to the Gomeh Hotel water heating system came with many advantages. The installation process took only six weeks, with minimum interruptions to the hotel’s guests, allowing the hotel to begin enjoying the benefits almost instantly.

TIGI’s solution upgraded the hotel’s water heating installation into a cutting-edge, innovative system with optimal energy efficiency. Using highly efficient solar thermal collectors, thermal storage, and tariff-aware dynamic control meant less electricity needed and time-flexible consumption, i.e., the smart control ensures the heat pumps operated only during low electricity rate hours. All in all, after installing TIGI’s solution, the Gomeh Hotel reduced its energy costs by around ????????%

With the increased efficiency came more sustainability, as less electricity was directly translated into less burning of fossil fuels since 90% of Israel’s electricity production comes from burning natural gas and coal.
